Fire alarm systems must be properly maintained by law in the UK. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person is legally required to make sure fire alarm systems are kept in good working order. This maintenance must be carried out by a competent person and in line with British Standard BS 5839. In practice, having a fire alarm maintenance contract is the recognised way to meet this legal requirement.
